Weird cycle

This morning I tested my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate to see how far along my cycle is. The other day it seemed to be going quite fine. The ammonia and nitrite had both fallen to 1 ppm and the nitrate was just barley detectable. Then this morning when I go to check the ammonia has dropped to .25 ppm, the nitrite stayed at about 1 ppm, but now the nitrite is around 40 ppm. Will it drop or am I going to have to do a water change before the fish ever go in?

It will go down on it's own but a 20% water change will help.

water change or not, do not add livestock to a tank with any detectable nitrites. If you meant the nitrates are sitting that high, then do a large water change and keep monitoring on a regular basis.

oops, yea i meant nitrates are sitting that high, and there is no livestock in the tank.

allenford_sc, were you referring to nitrites or the nitrates going down on their own?

AllenFord_SC 01/13/2007 01:16 PM

Basically if you have LR or LS or other nitrifying bacteria sources, all 3 will drop to zero. It's not going to happen over night but it should take care of itself.

cool, thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for :)
