left behind, they have to be physically removed by algae, water changes, or a skimmer. Usually a combination of all 3 is used. Some people also use media that absorbs particular chemicals.

yea i have a CPR type overflow and it's a pain, you'd think they'd be easier to deal with, but the u-tube is much simpler and lower maintenance.
