Is it sort of rotting?
I had a leather coral start to decay and the only cure is too cut away the dead parts.
If the holes start to get bigger your best bet would be to frag the leather.

5500K, go to a large hardware store or lighting supplier. They should have MH's of around that colour.
They will be nice and cheap as well.

I'd imagine distilled water would be as good if not better than RO/DI.
Even just a DI filter would work as well but would need frequent replacing.
