You should keep your nitrates under 5 ppm for a reef tank. Reduce your nitrates by doing water changes and by growing macro algae.
This explains everything and then some....

My friend converted a molly from full fresh to full salt in a couple hours. The molly was fine, and actually colored up more in the salt water after a few days.

A reef tank would be cool. With small fish. Just get a lot of snails to help you out on the cleaning. It would be sweet and very unique.
