sounds like cyano but a pic is needed - water parameters would also help provide insight.

i think phoenix is right sounds like cyano but it usually is not hairy more like slime. I just got rid of it in my tank. It took a few good water changes and sucking it off the rock/sand. It sounds like you might have an underlying problem though. what are your tank paramenters? I think phosban and carbon helped mine.

this sounds like red/purple slime algae. There are medications that will remove it. I had it and one of the underlying problems was excess nutrients and low Alk/PH

agree. sounds like cyano bacteria. How old is the tank? I would not use medicine to remove. if the tank is new then it is a natural part of the process. If the tank is established increase flow, skimming and possibly feed less

And do some research on SS Stars. Not a good star to have and it will soon be dead dying slowly from starvation.
