when you ship sps frags
hey,
just wondering what the most succesful method of shipping sps frags are? how do you guys normally ship frags long distances? everytime i recieve sps frags, they always come in small baggies, like the size of my fist, rather than the normal size plastic bags that most lfs put corals in. is there reasoning behind this or is it just because the frags are usually 1"-2" in size so a large bag isn't necessary? thanks |

smaller bag=less water=less shipping cost
i like a little extra water because it is harder to cause temperature swings with larger amounts of water.......balancing act i guess |

ive bought sps frags on a few occasions and i always recieve a box full of dead frags that smells horrible. i havent bought frags from someone in a while, but now im getting a bunch from a guy who i trust in california and we were trying to come up with the best way to ship the frags.
i had the idea of him cutting the frags now, i pay him half the money and then in april or may when the weather warms up a bit, he ships me the frags that have had time to encrust and i pay him the rest of the money. this way the frags will be less stressed (rather than them being freshly cut and shipped out) and hopefully make the trip across the U.S. from him in california to me on long island NY. im paying the $70 or so for overnight shipping, but its a long ride. i guess the best way is just put the frags in a plastic bag with water, throw in some hot/cold packs (whichever is weather appropriate) and stuff the box with newspaper/bubble wrap? |

The best shipments I recieve are little blue and red coolers.

Igloo coolers are by far the best way to ship. I have shipped literally hundreds of frags in the past year and my success rate is probably around 98%. Triple bagging frags is also a great way to insure against leakage.

Tripple bagged in a styrofoam lined box with a heat pack taped to the styrofoam lid works best. I just shipped some SPS to a guy yesterday and they all came in looking good. Be sure to use FedEx overnight too.

heat pad on lid, styrofaom lined box, 4mil thick bags, heat sealing the bags rather than rubberbands, fedex priority overnight = no deaths.
the big trick to keeping the heat in is not having a bunch of air space around the bags in the box, i pack all my stuff snug, not super tight, oh and i eat a little on shipping to add a little extra water. too little water = dead corals |

Where do you get the heat packs? Is there a specific type you should use that put off an exact temp for a given period of time?

and do you guys mean the red and blue thermos' or actual coolers, like a square shape? ive recieved corals in the red and blue thermos' before, but you can only fit like 1 or 2 bags in each thermos. so in the end, id end up using like 3 thermos'. |

Actual coolers. They sell coolers that are 12"x11"x10", and they can fit up to 10 frags.

the disposable ziplock tuperware? did they just fill that with water, or was the frag bagged and then placed inside the tuperware?
and what brand/style of heat packs are you guys using, and where are you getting them from? ive been using heat packs that i use for snowboarding, the ones you put in your boots/gloves to keep your toes/fingers warm. is there a better option? |
