Good german beer

I am looking for a lager that is a good representation of what German beer should taste like. Even though I enjoy Bud Light I would hate for somebody from another country to drink it and assume that it was the best the USA could do...

What would you recommend?

Why yes, indeed it is! I'm tired of domestic beer and what something new. Also taking a German class so I thought I would get in the mood.

If you meet any German folk in your class, I would highly recommend that you keep your past enjoyment of Bud Light to yourself.

And remember, you're not speaking German properly unless you're spitting while speaking. It's my first language, and it's just awful-- one step below Klingon on the crudeness scale.

Lol I always found Klingon to be a beautiful language! I don't know what it is about Bud but I enjoy the light carbonated flavor. I also like Blue Moon, Carona, Dos XX, Sol, Labat blu, Miller, most Hefaweisen's (spelling), and just about any lager as long as it doesn't have some sort of fruit flavor added. Ale just doesn't sit well with me sorry to say...

Well, drinking laws even here do not apply to private in-home use. I'm taking about moderate use with the immediate family, not as in a party with friends. I grew up with beer being on the dinner table often and wasn't denied it even as a child. I actually think it headed-off the fascination for it that most of my friends had.

Each state has different laws concerning drinking. Iowa law states that people may drink beer in their homes if they are over 18 (if I remember that correctly), however here in arizona you cannot purchase or consume beer unless you are over 21. My family made sure to instill within me that beer was not some forbidden beverage and that if it is consumed within reason that it can be an enjoyable and tasty drink.

May I suggest skipping German lager altogether and moving right along to Belgium. Stella Artois is a proper starting point IMO.

Dont give up on ales...there are some fine examples here in the USA that give the europeans a run for their money.

OMG OMG OMG WHERE CAN YOU GET FAT TIRE???? Matt has been looking all over the darned place for some around here, but the closest places that have it are in Chicago and St. Louis. He drank it all the time when he lived in Wyoming... Please please please tell me you can get it somewhere around you and ship it here!

Want a good representation of the Vienna Lager style? Dos XX Amber. Mexico didn't know to brew beer until the Germans arrived.

Warsteiner == horse urine

Try a Köstritzer Schwarzbier

Hubby drinks Sam Adams

Don't know if it's good or not since I don't particularly care for beer. If I do drink beer, I drink Michelob Ultra (and I'm not even sure you can call that a beer, more like flavored water).

Sam Adams is a great non-traditional tasting American beer. I am very fond of it, but my wife usually drinks it before I can have any

Take any of those heavy beers out of the fridge for an hour before you drink it. Drinking it super cold is like drinking a good cabernet sauvignon cold, it's just wrong.

One of the best I tried over in Germeny was Bitburger Pils. The stuff they sell here is alright but wasn't the same stuff the Germans get.

IMO - best site for getting ideas for what you'd like to try: http://beeradvocate.com/

Like starting a reef, lots to read about and learn then dive in and enjoy!

Some beers/breweries I enjoy: Chimay white, Duvel, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier (and the Dunkel), Brewery Ommegang (3 Philosophers, Hennepin), Unibroue (Maudite, Trois Pistoles ), Bell's, Samuel Smith
