Hair algae

For the past month and a half I've had problems with hair algae, my tan is full of it, also, everything living has been dying except for hermit crabs and three other fishes (Hawk fish, green chromis, and cleaner wrasse) oher than those creatures all is dead or dying. Please help.

Stop using tap water.
Test your water, and when it is down to minimal readings (nitrate & phosphate), get some cerith snails and mexican hermits (Clibanarius digueti).

All algae problems stem from too much nutrients in the water. If you're using tap water, then consider switching to ro/di water. If you are already using ro/di water, maybe your filter/sediment needs to be replaced. Cut down on the feeding

Don't expect quick fixes. When I developed a similar problem, I purchased my own RO/DI filter (you need one anyway if you're planning to be in the hobby long), started weekly 20% water changes, cut feeding drastically (no flake food), upgraded to a better skimmer, added a fuge with cheato, and increased my SB depth.

I'm slowly winning but have been at it for about 2 months now. It brought PO4 to zero and Nitrates to 2.5. I'm winning but slowly. You can too but don't get discouraged, it does take time. Good Luck!
