the power at our house was out for over 6 hourd the other night and i was freeking out...............what do you do?

i hoped that the temp. would be ok, that is what worried me most, and it dropped to about 68.....ahhhhhhhhh

that was a few days ago and everything looks great........

just for the future what is your plan???

IMO.....
Add the total value of your lifestock&coral and dollar amount for replacement. If over $500.00......then invest in a $300 generator....
Its a little cold of a way to look at it....but...IMO..it is what it is...

There are many different options. The best one is investing in a good generator. Next, you can get an AC/DC converter to plug things like powerheads and heaters in and either hook it up to a few deep cycle marine batteries or the car battery and leave the car running. You can also use computer battery backups. They also make battery powered air pumps that normally run on a couple D batteries. Lastly, if you are truly stuck, just put your hand in and stir gently for a while. You could probably stir for an hour with a 15 minute break in between and do fine.

Last time for me the solution was a 100' cord, a 12 pack of beer, and one cool neighbor!
This is where a portable generator really comes in hand, and alot of people do keep one just in case.

Great link Reefer - thanks. On another note, what size generator is recommended? We're thinking of purchasing one due to all the outtages around us (we're in SO Colorado) and you just never know what tomorrow will bring here weatherwise. Any recommendations? Would like to run part of the house if we could - but you know its all about the fish!

well....thats a different story....add all your wattage requirements and then add 15% on top....that should be a basic guidleine to the generator.....(you might also want to think solar/wind generators).....

I'm shopping for a generator as well, and from what I've read the Honda's seem to be the quietest(something to consider if you have neighbors close)
I've actually seen a few on craigslist, not a bad place to check.
