Hippo Tangs and Zo's
Has anyone ever heard of a Hippo Tang eating Zo's. I've had this Zo Frag since Feb and he as never bothered it, today I noticed that half of the frag is gone and then to night I caught the tang nipping at it. I think I'm going to have to try to catch him and trade him for a baby Hippo.

My yellow ate the half dead zoas I got in a frag pack. I have seen a few of my frags on the sand moved but no polys are missing.

Sometimes if it's a new rock the tangs will graze on the algae present until it's gone. I've had my hippo pick at a large pink colony, but no missing polyps.
Maybe try feeding the hungry, hungry hippo a bit more before you yank him out of the tank. The only thing that surprises me is the night feeding. I've seen my yellow tang cruise a bit at night, but my blue hippo is usually nicely wedged into a rock for the night. Just my $.02

I've had two different hippo tangs go after zoanthids.
Not just a bite or two, but consuming whole colonies. |

A few days ago, I decided to put some new zoas in my main display. Right now I have some Palys in there and they are doing great. Around 4pm I was admiring the rock under Actinics and thought "Look how pretty they are" Around 7pm, I came back to a bare rock....not one polyp left! I didn't catch them in the act but I can only suspect my two 8" blue Hippos to be the culprits. I also put some new Palys in and they are ok.

I agree with all of you. It's true, Hippos can and will eat zoas unfortunately.

I've had my hippo for about 6 months now and I haven't seen him go after any of my zoa's. I think the trick is keeping him well fed. I feed mine 3 times a day and theres always a fresh sheet of nori in the tank for him to eat.

It depends how manic Dori is? I think sometimes they think they are food then turn around and dont even notice them. They have to be the dumbest, most manic, goofy, spastic, fun, and annoying fish that I have ever owned. I had a large one in an old tank that would eat the zoos when there was a full moon. good luck
