Building a sump/refugium

Ok so im building a sump/refugium this week. Have a question, will my overflow box need to match my output pump in gph. Because the pump im getting is 700gph and overflow box is 600, is that ok? and does anyone have any setup's for baffles on a refugium/sump layout?

700gph at what distance?

if you have 3-4 feet of head dont expect to get 700gph out of the pump

there is a great thread in here about DIY sump. do a search you should find it. It helped me build mine.

they can be any layout you want

intake---return---refug etc

depends on what your looking to do in the sump.. skimm, refug...

The pump you're getting is most likely all right for your overflow because you'll most likely have enough head loss so that it won't overwhelm the capacity of your overflow. Take a look here and it may tell you if that specific pump will be all right depending on the precise configuration that you'll have....

My return pump rate was actually higher than my HOB and I got a loud "gulping" sound about every 20 seconds.

I went to Lowe's and purchased a control valve and some hoses (about 10.00)

Turned the valve (slightly) to restrict the flow and the gulping noise went away.

So in essence you can go a little higher and control the return rate with a control valve (as long as it's not cranked half way because this will shorten the life of your pump).
