Red Sea imports

Hi guys, posted this on gen. discussions but no joy, so.............

Just wondering with what frequency you are able to obtain Red Sea fish? Over here it seems to be about twice a year at the moment. Is it similar for you guys?

I would think they would be even more common in Europe, no?

Same situation here.....It's been like 18 months since anything nice from the Red sea has come through my neighborhood. Blonde Naso's frequently, but not a huge variety of fish.

Know the feeling Titan, word on the street its due to "geo-political matters". After whats been said here I wonder how much truth is in this statement. Not sure about the rest of Europe - some stockists from mainland Europe list RS species - doesn't mean there available though. Just need to be more patient I spose...............................

From everything that i have been told the main port for the Red Sea fish has been closed. There is another area that is still bringing the normal asfurs...semi's..and purples but still very limited. I have been asking a few of my local stores to bring in a white face butterfly and a red sea pearlscale b'fly and all give me the same answer that the main collection is closed. From what they are saying it could be all year. I don't know the reason behind it but 3 stores that buy direct all say the same thing so i would think there would be some truth to it. So that may be a big part of the prob Manta.

This is true; I've been in contact with some huge wholesalers and the answer I got was it's closed, but a minimal area and only harvested by "select" wholesalers. Most of the good stuff hits LosAngelos first, and the remainder is spread out amongst North America. Maybe someone else can verify this.......

My dealer here in Ireland has had some difficulty getting red sea stuff - he mentioned that these is some political none-sense behind........

He gets his stock through TMC - I'd say if they can't get it, then non one can!

Still all quiet on that front, I hear on the grapevine there's a dutch importer that reliably obtains RS stock but even they have been 'dry' for months.

Just checking to see if there's any change over there with you guys. The largest importer over here is being very cagey about availibility. One lfs has told us that there will be no Red Sea imports for the next year and possibly for the next decade!

I have direct contact with a Red Sea fish importer and he told me that they have been shut down for now and had their license revoked.

Apart from the "geopolitical" none sense, what actually is the problem, does anyone know?

i believe Saudi Arabia closed their territory for collection and pretty much everything from red sea comes from them.

So, the Saudi's have closed the collection stations...... why is that? Is it specifically related to their enviromental policies? Or is it more a "political" move? I don't wish to get involved in political issues on a fish board, but is it just an East 'vs' West thing?

Just thought I would chime in here.

My LFS fish store just recently got a semi-small shipment of Red Sea fish.

BTW, does the Red Sea have any Powder Blue Tangs?

No, as far as I know powder blue tangs are not available from the red sea...... pity though, imagine how gorgeous they would be, in theory!

Other countries besides S.A. export marine fish from R.S. but S.A. exports the bulk of them. Thats why only very few red sea fish available now.
