Mag or Quiet One?
What is a better pump to use as a return? Looking for something around the 1000gph range.

I Think mags are supposed to be pretty good pumps but they tend to run on the warm side and they are very LOUD. I don't have any opinions on the quiet one because I don't own one.

I've used both and prefer the Quiet One for heat purposes, the Mag runs MUCH warmer. Ironically, the Mag is also MUCH quieter
![]() The Mag seems better build, but my QO's have lasted a long time regardless and a quite a bit cheaper.

Consider the Oceanrunner 3500, I use it and it is very quiet. Pushes about 950 gph and costs less than $100. I got mine from aquacave if interested.

When I was about to buy my pump, I was going to get a quiet one, but I did more research and I heard that quiet one's sometimes don't start up again if the power goes out, and you have to mess with it to get it to go. I would definitely go with the mag because I ended up getting one and i love it, despite the noise.

I almost run Mag pumps exclusively on my system.. The do add some heat but you can also plumb them inline to run externally. I think the added flexibility is worth the little extra heat they generate.
My pumps.. mag 50 - return, mag 12 X2, Mag 5, mag 3 X2. |

I am using a Mag 7 for a return and I like it. No real noise issues here, other than the sound of the overflow, Now if my plumbing hit the side of the glass in the Sump it can get loud.., as for the heat I havn't noticed the tank getting too warm from its operation. a steady 80 degrees...

Hello--I use the Mag 950. I have no noise concerns. I have 2 of them. 1 running and 1 cleaning for a spare. ---Jerry

You can run Quiet Ones inline as well...

mag7 and a mag three that is probably more then 8 years old and still runs like a champ.
the mag7 did have a numb from the molding stillon the casing that the impeller was hitting so once i found and removed that it has been running just as good as the old mag 3 |

I use the mag 7 and I do not have any problems w/ noise. I like them, but there are many other great pumps out there!
