Odds are you didn't have your paypal sent of for auto renewal, or perhaps your credit that was tied to it expired.

Should go to paypal and look at your account history.

According to our records, your Premium Membership lapsed and was turned off in March of this year.

Normally, you would have.
But what that tells me is that you changed something in your PayPal account.
What happens is that a subscription is chained to a method of payment, say a debit card. If you remove that debit card from your PayPal account, they cancel all subscription payments attached to that card and so your PM renewal will ultimately cancel as well. I don't think their subscription process is as robust as normal PayPal where it first looks at your cash balance, then rolls to your primary account for money, then your secondary..etc.
