White "strands" growing out of rock and sand

I know I need a pic, but my camera needs some batteries. This morning I turned on the light and there was about 50 2"-3" long white "strands" sticking out of the rock and sand. As soon as the lights were turned on, the went back into hiding. Towards the top of the strands, it looked like some sort of filter or sponge. Does anyone know what these are? Good/Bad.

Hard to say without a picture.

In my tank I have seen brittle star legs extending from the rock, bristle worms, peanut worms and spaghetti worms. All tend to retract when the light come on...and in my opinion all are beneficial to the system.
