cpr fuge help

hey all i have a cpr fuge and i use to keep it full of that reef mud that u can put in it i was wondering i had to take the fuge down for a bit because i thought it was leaking but it wasnt it was a pin hole in my return well i had the fuge down for over a month and i want to restart it do u think i can fill it up half way with live sand instead to help keep nitrates to 0 let me know what u think
