Purple up a waste?
I've heard a bunch of mixed reactions to this stuff- Any ideas? Is it the same as adding calcium?
Thanks!

it contains an ingridient thats useless, Randy Holmes talks about it in of his articles, cant remember witch one.
primary ingridients though seems to be calcium, iodine and argonite dust <- the useless one. you want more koraline algae? use any of the liquid calcium supplements and follow the directions. best if you had a test kit to keep track of things. and wait ![]() |

My experience is that is does work but there are cheaper ways to promote your calcium growth. Purple up does raise your calcium but so does dosing pickle lime water which is very cheap. There are also other calcium suppliments that work such as Kent's liquid calcium, but once again... they are rather expensive and add up over time. Most effective and cheapest way I have found to maintain a stable calcium is my dosing kalk ( pickle lime. ) Pickle lime can be found at wal-mart and a large container will only cost you $2-$3.

Agree, much cheaper and safer methods out there for maintaining alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. I use Randy's 2-Part and love it.

It works fine for some but for others creates lots of problems.

I've been using P-U for months w/little coralline growth and a high nitrate level. I recently heard it contains heavy sugars that can drive up nitrates so I just switched to Kent Liquid Reactor (1-step!), we'll see.
