I have just to start to run my aquarium (75g) and the water temperature is at 88.5 F.
I have a closed loop w/ a Velocity T4 Pump. This pump is raising the temperature 4.F. I am thinking to replace it for a Gen-x 1190gph, which I already touched, when it was working and it was cool and quiet. In the return I have a Mag 7, which is raising the temperature in 3 F. -Somebody has a recommendation for a submersible pump that generates less heat? Do you think that a Quiet One Pump 3000 will do the job? I have 78 F. in the room. I have 4 T5 bulb 48" with a fan. Thank you. |

the quiet ones use a lot of wattage i believe, so i think that would actually raise the temp (unless its still less than the mag of course...got no clue there tho)
But have you tried having a fan blow either across the top of the water in your display or just having one point down into your sump? That always lowers it at least 5 for me.

Thank you sir_dudeguy, for the tip.
I only have a computer fan on the canopy but it is on only with the lights. What fan do you have and where did you placed? Any way if I know a cooler pump than a Mag 7 I will replace it. |

If you can point a fan at the water surface, that should help a lot, although evaporation will skyrocket. Does the tank have a lid?
An Eheim 1250 would likely be a good choice for a pump, in my opinion. It's 28 W as opposed to 70 for the Mag 7.

For your wtaer to be that hot, it's more than just the pump. Check your heater(s) and make sure it's not operating when it shouldn't be. Set it around 78 and let it be. How close are the lights to the surface of the water? Try raising them an inch or two higher. Also, seems quite obvious, but double check your temp with another thermometer. Some thermometers can give false readings, especially the kind that stick to the glass.

I think you are right but I would like to kip the same flow (600 to 700 GPH). Thank you. Hi AllenFord, I have not heater. My lights are at 4" from the water and I have a computer fan that turn on with the lights, may be is for that reason I do not increase the temperature with lights. Now I have 1 thermometer inside and 1 outside but unfortunately they are reading the same. I have an Octopus NW-150 Protein Skimer that in transferring like 1.5 to 2 F. But I am very happy with it; I am not going to touch it. Thank you. |

I would go with the Eheim, very dependable i have had no problems out of mine since i had it, plus a 3 year warranty.

Yes Criminal#58369, I am thinking in the Eheim 1260 , but do you know if this one runs cooler than the Mag 7, because my concern now is the temperature?

That's a lot of flow for a sump. I'd cut back the flow and work from there. Powerheads in the tank would be a cheaper way to add flow, over the long haul.

Hi Bertoni, the Mag 7 (700gph) was the one several peoples recommended to me for my 30 gallon sump and the Eheim 1260 is
(635 gph). I have an additional closed loop with tow seaswirld and I am happy with the flow. |

Have you tried running everything BUT the light for a day or so to see what the temp is then?....Just curious if that may be making a big difference with the temp.

Yes Demon, the first two days I turned on all the pumps (no lights) I was getting 88 F. after that I started to turn off the pumps, to see how much is heating each pump. Yesterday I connected all the pumps back and the temperature only got to 86.F.
Then I placed a fan pointing at the water surface under the hood like Bertoni recommended me and exactly that he said, it dropped down 5.F up to 81, and the evaporation raised to almost 3g. a day. I am happy with this result. I had read on a forum that a couple of Maxi Jets (295gph ea) connected in series for my return will do the job and very cold. Does somebody have any opinion about it? Thank you. |

Two MJ 1200s is already more wattage than the Eheim pump, and likely less flow. The Maxi-Jets are not pressure-rated.

The Velocity pumps are known to add a lot of heat. Even though they are external, they are water cooled. An air cooled pump would transfer much less heat.
For the return.... An Eheim 1260 is a much better pump than a mag7. It has a lot more flow (despite the "ratings") and is a lot quieter. I dont know that it would be that much better for heat though. I would use a smaller return pump.

Thank you very much guys, for now I am going to order the Gen-X
40 to replace the Velosity, then I am going to change the Mag 7 per Eheim 1260 but first, I will research more to see if I find one with lest heat and more or less the same flow. Thanks again. |

I have a GEN-X 40 (MAK4). Nice pump for the $$, but be aware it is NOT a quiet pump.
