Setting up Octopus calcium reactor?

Since this is my first calcium reactor, I have what may seem like a couple silly questions.

What is the line for that comes off the center of the lid and extends to the port next to the CO2 input? It shows to have a valve in this line.

Is the vent, other line coming off the lid the return?

Is the top sponge necessary? If so does it just sit in there by friction?

The metric 90 located inside the body at the top is easy to rotate. Should this be pointed to the side & slightly angled up or down, straight up, straight down, etc?
