Is that the system where you have a big open space under your sand bed? You make a plenum with egg crates/PVC/ and window screen?

If it is - I had it for over a year and my nitrates never got below 10 ppm. I ripped it out, went DSB/refugium and my nitrates went to zero. IMO, it no workee.

It's the classic DSB/plenum setup using large open sandbed & minimal rock. Can work well on large tanks but, in my opinion, it looks a bit odd on tanks less than a couple hundred gallons. Also takes a long time to establish. There's a lot written about it in the Reef Aquarium Books.

He claimed you didn't need to make Ca or Alk additions with a plenum. This was proven wrong and he recanted several years later.

I think his success was with an open system meaning he had frequent fresh sea-water water changes.

I get much lower nitrates without a plenum and 3 inches of sugar sized sand.

Jaubert's system was widely hailed years ago, but it has been difficult for the home hobbyist to duplicate the results since it must be done EXACTLY the way Jaubert described. I believe that most who tried have since removed the plenum.
