Have any of you ever noticed??? (Protein Skimmer)

Maybe it's just my skimmer, but every time I go to clean out my Skimmer cup or empty the cup, the moment I open it it smells like the worst fart known to man!

What causes that god awful smell?

I just assume that means the skimmer is pulling out a bunch of bad gunk that I don't want in my tank, but man that smell is nasty!

Trust me, it's not just your skimmer!! I clean my cup every 3rd day or else the smell becomes almost unbearable. I know of several ways to reduce the smell, but it's not too bad if I keep up on it.

I'm all ears, if anyone has ideas for reducing the smell, although I will admit, I never seem to smell it until I open the protein skimmer cup.

Still, anyone knows what causes that smell?

I'm sure the smell is caused simply by what's collected in the cup. It's a concentration of dissolved organics. We can only imagine some of the things that end up in that cup. It's not so bad when it's all spread out in the water column, but when it's concentrated into a goopy mess, then it becomes quite stinky.

I've never tried it, but throwing some carbon in the skimmer cup ought to absorb some of the odor...

It would probably be more trouble than it's worth when emptying the cup though.

The smell is caused by decaying organics and protien. Think of the skimmer as the a$$ of your tank. What comes out isn't going to smell nice.

I guess that's one way of looking at it!

I'm new to SW, and I could not believe the smell and look of the skimmate. I think the stuff ranks in the top 5 of the "nastiest stuff ever" list. Snot looks like spring flowers compared to this stuff.

On a slightly gross side note, have you ever been in a hot-tub with a lot of people and noticed a little brown foam? Same stuff, except you're in the water with it!

take an orange peel and put some salt in it - natures own air freshner. OR plug yer nose... or empty the cup right after you fart (camoflage)
or take big wiffs it will go away faster.

My skimmate smells awful sometimes, like rotten meat and eggs. Other times it has an ALMOST pleasant earthy odor to it. I guess it depends what it happens to be pulling out.

My tank is cycling, and a lot of the LR I put in my tank at the start of the cycle was uncured, so I guess that's why I'm not getting the "pleasant Earthy" smell that DSM punk describes.

Funny thing is... it's probably not unhealthy to drink. I'm not recommending it, just for the salt it would be nasty... but you're not going to poison your beer buddy.

There isn't a single species of algae that is poisonous to us (that we've discovered).

It's not algae in there is it, I always thought it was waste? If it's waste, I can't see how drinking it would be good for you. That's just my opinion.
