Duncanopsammia axifuga

Hi, I was in my LFS today and they have a Duncanopsammia axifuga with 6-8 heads for $50, it is a good price? What are the requirements to have this coral healthy?

Thats a good price! They're usually around $25/head. Standard tank parameters apply, medium flow. It should be fed directly with mysis or flake food several times a week. A lot like a sun coral.

actually they are really not like a sun coral at all. duncans are photosynthetic and and sun corals are not. you can feed duncans if you want them to grow faster but really don't need to be spot fed like sun corals do. hth

Is 192w of pc enough to have thems happy? I have a frogspawn, red open brain, porites and a zoa garden with photosyntetic gorgs.

I believe they do well under low light, and can be acclimated to bright light. My guess is that it would do fine. Feed it. Good price in my opinion.

In my experience with these corals feeding seems very important. I had one that was doing great. Popping up new heads all the time and eating like a pig. Then I got a tang that kept stealing food from it and the tissue receded. This is not a conclusive scientific study. Just my experience.

I have several colonies and none have been fed in over 6 months and all are growing like weeds. The tissue receding is probably due to the tang picking at it to get the food.

Thanks for the replies, I will go this tuesday to the LFS to buy it (hope still thare). I have no problem to feed it, I keep two year ago a sun coral and are very easy to keep and I was feeding thems weekly so I believe I will not have problem with the Duncan. Will post pics when I get it.

Very good price, and they are somewhat photosynthic, low lighting requirments, mine do however love a little extra food now and again and grow surprisingly well, hope you get em'

These are great corals. Feed well with mysis or Arctic pods and they will reward you with rapid budding and growth. Call and put a hold on it! The price is great because as Wrench said, the typical price is 20-25 dollars/head.

Feeding is key with these guys, and to answer Animal Mother's question, I heard they have a pretty bad sting, but have never had one.

These things dont sting, i touched mine the other day whilst moving them sbout and did not hurt me/sting me, and i was not wearing gloves, i have them in higher flow close to the surface with 150watt halide, i dont feed them and they seem really happy.

You don't have to feed very often unless you want to push them to grow, I'd still feed your tank at least once a week for the general health of your reef =)

They are definitely an easy coral to keep that will grow fast if fed, your lighting will be plenty.

They can be sticky but no sting/irritation to the skin from my experience =)
