Couple of Metal Halide questions!

I just upgraded from PC lighting to 250W MH for Christmas.

I've been slowly increasing the light cycle starting from 2 hours and increasing 30 minutes per week until I reach the full cycle so I don't overpower the corals.

My first question is how long is the optimum time to run the MHs?

My supplemental lighting are 4 96W PCs which aren't much. I run those from 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM.

I'm usually gone for work from 8am until 5-6pm. So I would like for the MHs to be on for a bit when I'm home so I can enjoy it.

So I was thinking of running the MHs from 1pm until about 8pm. That would be a 7 hour cycle. Is that ok? Too long, too short, just right?

My second question is regarding the bulbs. Right now I'm running the 10K Metal Haldies that came with my fixture. But I was considering switching to 14K bulbs instead. Is one bulb better than the other? Or is it pretty much personal preference?

Thanks in advance for any responses, I'm a Metal Halide rookie! I do LOVE them though.

I run my actinics for about 12 hours a day and the halides for about 8.

As for bulb preference it all depends. As long as you get a good bulb that supplies enough light then you should be fine. Some bulbs like the xm15k actually put out less light then 20k counterpart. Looking at the stickies at the top of the lighting and filtration forum can give you a good idea of intesity ratings.

I personally like the look of the reeflux 12k bulbs. Those plus 4 pc actinics would give a nice color.

Are they single ended?

I am running mine for 7 hours each with a one hour overlap
(have 2 MH's ) but in your case I would say your on the track.
I delayed my starts as well so I can enjoy the Halides when I
get home from work. I have 14k Hamiltons but it is all personal preference for bulb spectrum for the most part.

I only have MH and run 6 hours a day, because after that it doesn't serve the coral any purpose. that is

No, actually I have the double ended HQI bulbs. The guy where I got the fixtures highly recommended the Hamilton 14K bulbs and ordered them for me. He said he would switch them out with for the 10K bulbs that came with the fixture at no cost.

Just waiting for the bulbs to come in!
