I wonder if MarcoRocks use sodium hydroxide in the washing process? A mix of suger, ammonia and sodium hydroxide turns the water black just leave out the Silver Nitrate in the mix.. water gets cloudy then turns black at the end of video.. I could be wrong but just a ideahttp://www.instructables.com/id/Make...rate-Sugar-Am/

Update!

A few people requested updated photos, so here's one. The tank was moved a year ago (January 2010) and re-scaped without any losses and hopefully will be upgraded to a 70G soon. My maintenance schedule has slipped a bit over the past few weeks, so there is a problem with cyanobacteria in many areas as well as a little Caulerpa, but the corals are growing well.

Is the rotten egg smell caused by sulfur made by the bacteria in a low o2 area ? If so I think that would be harmful no? Think you need to get some turbid flow in there asap.

Hahaha...that black water was awesome!

Did you ever figure out if it was carbon dust or some bacteria bloom? Must have been bacteria right?

That's epic. Way to stay calm and just ride it out instead of trashing the whole works and starting over. People do that too often in this hobby I think.
