another DIY Kalk reactor! Happy Halloween

This is something I've spend most of today mucking around with. A 10" media housing with a mixing pump mounted on the side with some 1/2" bulkheads... origionally I tried drilling and tapping two holes for the pump but that wasnt working so well. So I corked them with some threaded plugs which turned out looking like bolts in Frankensteins neck. Completely accidental I swear!

I'm still waiting for the silicone to cure and tomorrow I will see if it leaks.

So there you have it KALKENSTEIN!!! Happy Halloween!

I bought some clear media canisters on ebay and I'm experimenting with them. I want to mount the circulation pump a bit different this weekend and then if it works out alright I'll post a new pic.

Heres my second attempt at making a kalk reactor. I was able to get the clear media housing on ebay and its a maxi jet 400 pump. What I did was I drilled then tapped the side in and then used some modified 1/2 PVC parts and cement to mount the pump. I also tapped the center of the top to mount a short length of 1/4 hose to run down to the bottom of the housing.

Theres a tiny bit of leaking around where the PVC is threaded in. I should have used a bit more teflon tape, but I'm sure that leak will plug itself with kalk anyways so I'm not too worried. Heres a picture with the lid off and without my flash being used.

I dont know what most of the proper hardware store names for some of this stuff is but what I built was composed of:

1) 10" RO media housing,
2) maxi-jet 400 pump (plus some of the accessories in the box)
3&4) 2" and a 3" length of 1/2 PVC,
5&6) threaded 1/2 PVC plug and a smooth 1/2 PVC plug
7&8) 90ΒΊ 1/2 PVC smooth elbow and one that is threaded on one end and smooth on the other,
9) length of 1/4 hose cut 9" long
10) two 1/4" threaded push in hose fittings
11) two 1/2 threaded to smooth PVC adaptors

I also needed a drill, some drill bits, a vise, a hack saw, a 1/2 pipe tap, a lot of Teflon tape, some PVC cement, a measuring tape and a Band-Aid.

Use the 1/2 tap to thread the center of the top to mount the 1/2 threaded plug into it. Drill the plug so that the 1/4 tubing will fit snug inside.

Drill the side of the housing in two places 3.5" apart from each other. I used a 3/4 drill bit. Then use the 1/2 pipe tap to thread the two holes.

Screw the two 1/2 threaded/smooth adaptors in, when you do the lower one squeeze your hand inside the housing to mount the threaded elbow and PVC as shown.

The only other trick I used was I drilled a hole in the smooth PVC plug to fit the outfeed of the pump.

The pump and its accessories are not cemented in place, the only pieces I cemented together were the smooth plug into the bottom adaptor and a 2" section of PVC between the upper adaptor and elbow.

I know I'll never get a job writing instructions but hopefully this was enough to give you enough of an idea so that you could figure the rest out on your own.
