Yes! You are right! contton can pull out dirty before they become tiny,and skimmer can pull out tiny dirty ,even some dissoluble dirty.Of course ,there must be some protein and dirty which couldn't be pulled out by skimmer.

What I said 6 times is the quantitys of dirty in all which will change into NO3 and other inorganic matter in the end. The quantity of dirty which contton pulls out in small tanks is at least 6 times than small skimmer can do,if you clean the cotton daily.

Of course, the rock must be simple in the tank ,otherwise, most dirty will stop on the rock or sand and will never go into contton or skimmer.The tank which is full of rocks needs strong stream and bumpy stream together or other methods to Prevent dirty Accumulate to gather in the tank( on rock ,sands ,etc) Otherwise, Only few fish can live in the tank and water will go bad soon.
