I will say you got a hitch hiker running around and most likly its a mantis. Set up a trap and catch it.,

Is it after your lights go out? If so, it might be due to cooling. Could also be a shrimp like previously stated.

mantis shrimp are mostly diurnal. Probably not one of them. Other things that can make clicks: snails (sometimes by themselves, sometimes moving infront of a powerhead), visitherm stealth heaters, muscles or other bivalve hitch hikers on th bottom of live rock lifting the live rock up and down, clownfish, etc etc.

If you notice piles of snail/hermit shells broken at the top it is probably a mantis.

sorry i just read my post and i was tired last night. Yes its after lights out, and the last time i added rock was over two months ago. Is any reason it could be happening right now oppose to the time i added rock.

I love how people just right off the bat assume it is a mantis shrimp. As dan started, it can be a number of differnt things causing the clicking noises. Do you have any clowns in the tank?

I would bet its just a snail hitting the glass with its shell.

how long is it after the lights go out? How often do you hear it after it starts?

My light fixture makes a nice snapping sound or two a few minutes after it goes off for the night as it cools down then its quiet again all night long..

I first thought I had a mantis shrimp when I heard loud tapping on the glass, but then I saw it was one of my snails! They are able to twist their shell back and forth very quickly to shake off hermits or whatever else, and if they are near the glass it makes a pretty loud noise.

Well I'm sure this is not the case, but anyway. During the day my wrasse will go up to the black trim that barelys sticks out in the tank adn siwms up and down and taps it with his beak. That scared me I that my tank was going to be all over our living room!

if you have t-5s with Tek or Icecap reflectors I'd bet they are making the noises. mine always creak and pop right after turning off when the reflectors are cooling down.

I would guess towards the lights popping as they cool or like many other people said possibly a mantis or pistol shrimp. If it it only after you turn out the lights I would be lured more toward the lights making the sound though.
