My DIY carboy skimmer was dismantled, the riser cone I needed for it to perform better, I didn't know how to make... maybe I could get it back online one day.

If only someone would post a thread on forming cones

Newbie here thinking of building my first skimmer. The cone thing is easy...I just not sure what all the rest of the stuff is for. The PVC stand looks like a drain and TroyLee's last skimmer has a gate valve to limit the water coming out of the drain. Now my questions is, what is the little chamber that the airline attaches to? Im guessing an air siphon, but why is a canister needed.

If I can figure this stuff out, I will be building one very soon. I need a nicer one for my 55bb tank. The AquaC urchin isnt going to cut it. I will do a write up on how to do the cone.

The air chamber is to quiet the air line sucking noise.

the cone isn't hard to guess at how it's built but a comprehensive guide is always easier then trial and error.

Simply put building the form and getting the acrylic is not the difficult thing, calculating size of sheet and proper cut shape as well as heating technique take time to figure out. Hope you can show us.

Hey Troylee, I am interested in how you make your cones as well. I have made a cone for the reducer from 8" to 4" and about 4" tall. used my lathe to make a mould, cut out the acrylic as a flattened cone, heated and put in mould. How do you do yours or would you have to kill me afterwards?

I will try to post pics of mine when i get a chance.

1.25" or 1.5" Uniseals will work just fine.

Check the appropriate drill bit to be used...bulkreef has the info in their prod description.

***Edit...Ok! You wanted Alternatives***

Sorry...

wow..... thanks guys for the kind words.... i actually forgot about this thread lol....
i might be able to do something... the hardest part in cone making is heating the acrylic evenly to get a nice uniform cone.... im trying to think what you guys could use i have a big industrial heat lamp i use it's not something you would have in the garage....lol

Good to see you around on this thread. Im sure everyone would love input. I think Im going to try the heat gun method when rolling the cone. If it doesnt go well...off to the oven I go. Luckily I have access to an oven big enough to do mine. My cone layout is 24x20ish. Im thinking for people who dont, a 2 piece cone would be the best.

a heat gun will never work... you need all the material the same temp at the same time....
i dont know what you guys can use since a cone on the flat is pretty big..... that big cone i made is 24" base 36" tall and it took almost a full 4'x8' sheet of acrylic to make it.... i was thinking about it last night and really cant think of anything availible at home to use.....
your oven in the kitchen is fine for something small like 6" base and 12" tall but any bigger you need a big oven.....

The guy Jesse in my thread was able to use a heatgun. Its roughly the same size. The layout will fit in the oven at my parents bakery. Meh...we will see what happens. The cone skimmer you made is MUCH MUCH bigger.
